Ovulation Induction Clinic Spain | Clinica Fertia Costa del Sol Spain
The following information describes what ovulation induction is and what to expect when it is offered as a viable treatment option at Clinica Fertia, which is an International Fertility Clinic, in Spain, on the Costa del Sol.
What Is Ovulation Induction
If the maturation and discharge of the egg (ovulation) does not occur naturally, it is possible to stimulate the ovaries to function properly by using ovulation induction. The term ovulation induction is when fertility drugs are used to induce ovulation in a woman who does not ovulate herself, or ovulates irregularly. Ovulation induction treatment, using either tablets or injections, causes the woman to release an egg and so have the chance of conceiving naturally. This means that the timing of intercourse is very important. Ovulation Induction treatment is offered when:
- Ovulation does not occur naturally
The easiest alternative is medication (clomiphene tablets), but if this treatment proves unsuccessful, hormonal injections are the next option. The FSH hormone is given in the form of daily injections; at the same time the maturation of the follicle is followed by ultrasound scans every two to five days. When the follicle is large enough, the actual ovulation may be triggered with another hormonal injection (HCG). The dose of the fertility drug varies from woman to woman but is critical. The sac containing the egg needs to be monitored closely. The success rate of inducing pregnancy in this manner is between 10-15% per treatment, but often these treatments are carried out several times, which means that the likelihood of pregnancy also increases. Ovulation induction can be used for pre-menopausal women who want to become pregnant and are not ovulating for some reason. Ovulation induction is a safe and effective means of helping infertile women who do not ovulate or who ovulate irregularly.
Ovulation Induction - What To Expect
Each ovulation induction treatment is wholly dependent on the specific needs of the patient. Below we have highlighted some general guidelines which may be of help.
- A few days after your period begins, follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) and/or human menopausal gonadotropins (hMG) treatment is started
- For approximately the next week or so, your hormone levels will be evaluated by your doctor. Your follicles will be examined by ultrasound frequently, in order to evaluate their development. During treatment you will always be observed by your doctor for any possible medication side effects.
- Once your follicles are almost mature, your doctor will tell you when to take your human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection. hCG causes the final maturation of the eggs. The hCG injection is usually given about 35 hours before egg retrieval is scheduled.
