What Is Ovulation Induction

If the maturation and discharge of the egg (ovulation) does not occur naturally, it is possible to stimulate the ovaries to function properly by using ovulation induction.

The term ovulation induction is when fertility drugs are used to induce ovulation in a woman who does not ovulate herself, or ovulates irregularly. Ovulation induction treatment, using either tablets or injections, causes the woman to release an egg and so have the chance of conceiving naturally. This means that the timing of intercourse is very important.

Ovulation Induction - What To Expect

• A few days after your period begins, follicle-stimulating hormones (FSH) and/or human menopausal gonadotropins (hMG) treatment is started
• For approximately the next week or so, your hormone levels will be evaluated by your doctor. Your follicles will be examined by ultrasound frequently, in order to evaluate their development. During treatment you will always be observed by your doctor for any possible medication side effects.
• Once your follicles are almost mature, your doctor will tell you when to take your human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) injection. hCG causes the final maturation of the eggs. The hCG injection is usually given about 35 hours before egg retrieval is scheduled.
