In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) Clinic Spain | Clinica Fertia Costa del Sol Spain

The following information describes what in vitro fertilisation (IVF) is and what to expect when it is offered as a viable treatment option at Clinica Fertia, which is an International Fertility Clinic, in Spain, on the Costa del Sol

.

What Is In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) was originally developed as a treatment method used when there is a fault with the fallopian tubes. Nowadays, IVF is the most efficient treatment method regardless of the causes of infertility. With each couple in question, this treatment also allows us to obtain new information on the background of their infertility.

The In vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycle is started with hormonal treatment, with the objective of maturing several follicles simultaneously in the ovaries. Thus, several eggs can be retrieved, of which 2/3 are fertilized and begin to multiply.

There are many factors, however, affecting the number of eggs and their fertilisation. The treatment is carried out by maturing the follicles for about 10 days with hormonal injections. The response to these injections is followed by ultrasound scans. After this, ovum pick-up is performed using transvaginal ultrasound.

Fertilisation of the oocytes
The retrieved ova are fertilized on culture dishes by adding a sufficient number of sperm. The fertilised eggs are normally cultured for 48 hours. By this stage, the fertilised oocytes will have been divided into the 2-4-cell stage.

One or two of the best embryos are selected for the transfer, and if there are several good-quality embryos, the rest can be frozen for later use.

Embryo transfer is a procedure where the embryos are introduced into the uterine cavity with a soft thin plastic catheter.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF)treatment is offered when:

  • There are fallopian tube issues
  • Low sperm quality
  • These days IVF is the most efficient treatment method regardless of the causes of infertility

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)- What To Expect

  • Fertility drugs are administered to stimulate your ovaries to develop several mature eggs for fertilisation. In a normal cycle only one egg is released.
  • Hormone injections that stimulate ovulation are given and you will be closely monitored by your doctor.
  • By monitoring your blood hormone levels, your doctor can detect when your eggs are mature.
  • An ultrasound scan confirms that the eggs are ready to be retrieved. Your doctor will remove the eggs from your ovaries.
  • Another ultrasound will help your doctor to locate the eggs.
  • At about the same time as the eggs are being collected, your partner needs to provide a fresh sample of sperm.
  • The sperm is then washed and the best quality sperm extracted ready to fertilise the eggs.
  • The sperm is then combined with the eggs in a dish containing a nutrient medium, which is then cultured in an incubator.

Over the next two days the dish is checked to see if any eggs have been fertilised.

  • When eggs are fertilised they turn into a ball of cells, which is an embryo. Only the healthiest embryos will be inserted into the woman's uterus.
  • The chosen embryos are transferred with a thin catheter (tube) through your cervix into your uterus, sometimes using ultrasound to guide the insertion.

In a successful cycle, one or more embryos will implant in your uterine wall and continue to grow.
